What high blood pressure is
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the artery walls. When it stays high, the heart, kidneys, brain and eyes carry the strain over years, usually without any warning signs, which is why a cuff reading is the only way to know. Your physician diagnoses it and manages it, usually with changes to food, activity, salt, alcohol and sleep, and often with medication.
Readings that need urgent care
A reading far above your usual, especially with chest pain, shortness of breath, a severe sudden headache, vision changes, weakness, numbness or confusion, is an emergency: call 911. Fainting needs urgent care too. Do not wait for an acupuncture visit, and never stop your medication to see what happens.
How we work with it
Treatment starts from your pattern. For a picture of rising yang (flushed face, temple headaches, a short fuse), a practitioner might consider a formula such as Tian Ma Gou Teng Yin (Gastrodia and Uncaria Drink, 天麻鉤藤飲). For a heavy, phlegm-damp picture, dizziness with a foggy head, a different formula fits. Herbs are checked against every medication you take; licorice (gān cǎo, 甘草), common in many formulas, can raise blood pressure in some people, so we leave it out or watch it closely.
Acupuncture aims to settle what is rising and calm the spirit, sometimes with Master Tung's points on the hands and feet. Dietary therapy follows the same reading.
Keep a home log of your readings with the time of day and bring it. We look at it with you alongside sleep, headaches and stress, and you share it with your physician, who decides on any change to treatment.
Formulas here illustrate how pattern diagnosis shapes treatment. They are not recommendations; a practitioner selects and adjusts formulas for the individual.
Questions people ask
Can acupuncture lower blood pressure?
Acupuncture is studied for its effects on the stress response and blood pressure, and research is ongoing. We do not promise a lower reading. We treat the pattern behind your symptoms as support, while your physician manages the numbers and the medication.
Can I stop my blood pressure pills if I start acupuncture or herbs?
No. Never stop or change blood pressure medication without the physician who prescribed it. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous, and we never ask you to.
Why do you ask so much about sleep and digestion for a blood pressure problem?
Because the classical reading depends on them. A red-faced, irritable person who sleeps badly and a heavy, foggy person with a sluggish gut can share the same reading on the cuff and still need very different treatment.
