What fatigue and burnout are
Fatigue becomes a problem when it stops matching what you did. You sleep and wake unrefreshed, you lean on coffee to start and sugar to finish, and small tasks feel uphill. Burnout is the version tied to work and caregiving: exhaustion, a growing distance from the job, and a sense that effort no longer pays off. The conventional pathway starts with your physician, who looks for the medical, sleep and mood causes that need their own treatment. Post-viral fatigue has its own page at long COVID and post-viral fatigue, and an underactive thyroid at hypothyroidism.
About "adrenal fatigue"
Many people arrive having read about adrenal fatigue. It is not a recognized medical diagnosis, and we do not use it as one. Adrenal insufficiency, where the glands truly fail, is real and rare, and it belongs with an endocrinologist; weight loss, dizziness on standing, salt cravings or darkening skin are reasons to see your physician promptly.
What the term usually describes is still real: months of running on stress, poor sleep and skipped meals. Classical medicine has precise names for that state, and it reads each person's version differently. One person is mostly depleted, another is wound tight with nothing left in the tank, and the plan follows that difference.
Fatigue with unexplained weight loss, fevers, drenching night sweats, breathlessness or chest pain needs medical care first. With chest pain or fainting, call 911.
How we work with it
Visits combine acupuncture, sometimes with Master Tung's points, and a classical formula from herbal medicine chosen for your pattern. Dietary therapy matters here: regular warm meals are often the first change we suggest. Pacing does too, so you stop borrowing tomorrow's energy.
We track it with you in plain terms: how you wake, how far into the day you get before the slump, and whether a busy day still costs you the next one. More about this group of conditions is at energy and fatigue.
Questions people ask
Do you treat adrenal fatigue?
We do not use adrenal fatigue as a diagnosis, because it is not a recognized medical one. We do treat the exhaustion people usually mean by it, reading it as a classical pattern alongside whatever your physician has checked.
My blood work came back normal. Can acupuncture still help with fatigue?
Many people we see have normal results and are still worn out. Normal tests are useful because they rule things out, and the classical reading of pulse, tongue and history often still finds a pattern to work with. We cannot promise a result, and we will tell you plainly what we find.
Is burnout something you work with?
Yes. Burnout is usually a long stretch of stress layered over poor sleep and irregular meals, and the classical lens reads all three together. Your doctor or therapist stays part of the picture, especially if low mood is part of it.
Will herbs interfere with my thyroid or antidepressant medication?
Every herb is checked against the medications and supplements you take before anything is prescribed, and we never ask you to change a prescription. Bring your full list to the first visit.
