For anyone preparing for or going through IVF, IUI or a frozen embryo transfer. Your fertility clinic leads the medical plan; we fit our visits around its calendar and keep your clinic informed of what we use.

Two lenses, one plan

Water 水 is the phase it is most often read through. Here the classical lens leads: differential pattern diagnosis decides the treatment, with the Western picture as context.

Where acupuncture is studied

Research has looked at acupuncture around embryo transfer, during stimulation and for stress across the IVF process. Results are mixed, and the effect on stress and well-being is the most consistent theme.

Blood flow and calm
Acupuncture is studied for its effects on the stress response and on blood flow to the uterus and ovaries; research is ongoing.
Medications first
Your stimulation drugs, trigger and progesterone are the core of the cycle. Nothing we do changes that plan.

The classical lensChannels, patterns, the five phases

Building, moving, holding

The phases of IVF line up with the classical phases of a cycle: the follicular phase builds yin and blood, ovulation and retrieval call for movement, and the luteal phase asks yang to warm and hold.

After retrieval
Bloating and discomfort after retrieval are read as qi and fluids disturbed in the lower burner, eased with gentle needling.
A settled spirit
The wait after transfer is hard on the Heart and spirit, so calming the shen is a central aim of those visits.

Patterns we often see

  • Kidney essence deficiency shèn jīng kuī xū 腎精虧虛
  • Kidney yang deficiency shèn yáng xū 腎陽虛
  • Liver constraint with blood deficiency gān yù xuè xū 肝鬱血虛

Patterns are examples of how this is often read, never a diagnosis. Yours is read at your visit.

How we work: one plan

Acupuncture timed to your clinic's calendar, gentle electro-acupuncture in preparation where it fits, herbs in preparation only with your clinic's knowledge, acupressure for the wait, and food advice. Your reproductive endocrinologist leads the plan, and we cannot guarantee conception.

What IVF involves

In vitro fertilization runs in phases. Down-regulation or priming prepares the ovaries. Stimulation uses injected hormones to grow several follicles at once, monitored by ultrasound and blood tests. A trigger shot matures the eggs before retrieval under sedation. The eggs are fertilized in the lab, and an embryo is transferred to the uterus, fresh or after freezing, followed by progesterone support and the long wait for a pregnancy test. IUI is a lighter version: monitoring, sometimes medication, and sperm placed directly in the uterus.

Matching each phase

Before stimulation, the classical aim is building: Kidney essence, blood and a steady cycle. During stimulation, it shifts to circulation and comfort, as the ovaries enlarge and bloating sets in. Around transfer, the aim is quiet: a relaxed abdomen and a settled spirit. In the luteal wait, needling is gentle and aimed at calm. If you develop signs of ovarian hyperstimulation, such as rapid weight gain, severe bloating or abdominal pain, or shortness of breath, contact your clinic right away; that comes before any visit with us.

How we work with it

Share your clinic's calendar with us and we plan acupuncture around it, with gentle electro-acupuncture in the preparation phase where it fits. Herbs belong mostly to preparation and are used only with your clinic's knowledge. We give you acupressure points for nerves and sleep in the wait. We watch what you are going through day to day: sleep, stress, digestion and side effects of the medications.

Questions people ask

Does acupuncture improve IVF success?

The research on acupuncture around IVF is mixed and still developing, and we will not quote success rates. Many people value it for stress, sleep and feeling more in control during a demanding process. We cannot guarantee conception, and your clinic's protocol stays at the center of the plan.

Can I take Chinese herbs during an IVF cycle?

Only with your clinic's knowledge. Herbs are most often used in the months of preparation, and many are paused once stimulation begins. Every formula is checked against your fertility medications, and we follow your clinic's guidance.

Should I have acupuncture on transfer day?

Many people do, before and after the transfer, and we can often arrange the timing around your appointment. If your clinic has a preference, we follow it.

What about IUI?

The approach is similar and simpler: preparation through the cycle, a visit around the insemination, and calm support in the wait that follows.
