Hyperthyroidism

Supportive care for the racing heart, heat, poor sleep and restless energy of an overactive thyroid. Graves' disease and hyperthyroidism need an endocrinologist, and we work alongside that care, never in place of it.

Two lenses, one plan

Fire 火 is the phase it is most often read through. Here the classical lens leads: differential pattern diagnosis decides the treatment, with the Western picture as context.

The Western lensAnatomy, physiology, biomechanics

Too much hormone, everything faster

Excess thyroid hormone speeds the heart, the gut and the nervous system and raises heat production. In Graves' disease, antibodies stimulate the gland directly, and the same immune process can affect the eyes.

Specialist care
Hyperthyroidism needs an endocrinologist. Antithyroid medication, beta blockers, radioactive iodine and surgery are the standard options, and they are never replaced by acupuncture or herbs.
Iodine
Iodine is the raw material of thyroid hormone, so iodine-rich foods, seaweeds and supplements can matter here. Ask your endocrinologist before adding any.
What research looks at
Acupuncture has been studied mainly for symptoms alongside medical treatment, such as anxiety and poor sleep. Research is limited.

The classical lensChannels, patterns, the five phases

Fire without water

Yin cools, moistens and anchors. When it is consumed by long stress, overwork or illness, yang has nothing holding it, and the heat that results is restless and drying: sweating, a pounding heart, sleeplessness, weight melting away.

Heart and Kidney
Water from the Kidney is meant to rise and calm the Heart's fire. When it cannot, palpitations, anxiety and broken sleep follow, the part of this picture that supportive care most often targets.
Swelling at the neck
A visible goiter is read as phlegm and qi binding at the neck, often after long emotional constraint.

Patterns we often see

  • Yin deficiency with fire blazing yīn xū huǒ wàng 陰虛火旺
  • Liver constraint turning to fire gān yù huà huǒ 肝鬱化火
  • Phlegm and qi binding at the neck tán qì yù jié 痰氣鬱結

Patterns are examples of how this is often read, never a diagnosis. Yours is read at your visit.

How we work: one plan

Unhurried visits with acupuncture to settle the Heart and nourish yin, calming scalp acupuncture where it fits, an iodine-aware classical formula when appropriate, cooling food advice and an acupressure point for the evening. Supportive care only: your endocrinologist leads treatment of the thyroid.

What hyperthyroidism is

When the thyroid makes too much hormone, the body runs fast: a racing or pounding heart, heat intolerance and sweating, weight loss despite a good appetite, shaky hands, anxiety, loose stools and trouble sleeping. Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition, is the most common cause; thyroid nodules and inflammation of the gland are others. Treatment includes antithyroid medication, radioactive iodine or surgery, chosen with an endocrinologist.

When to get emergency care

A very fast or irregular heartbeat with chest pain, fainting, high fever, confusion or severe agitation can signal a dangerous surge of thyroid hormone. Call 911. New palpitations or shortness of breath also need prompt medical attention.

How we work with it

The classics grouped swellings of the neck as yǐng bìng (癭病), and many of their old formulas for it lean on seaweeds. Those are the herbs we leave out. For the sleepless, overheated picture, a practitioner might consider a formula such as Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Emperor of Heaven's Special Pill to Tonify the Heart, 天王補心丹), with care taken over every ingredient; where stress and Liver heat drive the picture, a cooling, qi-moving formula instead.

Visits are calm and unhurried. Acupuncture, with calming scalp acupuncture lines where they fit, works alongside any formula. You leave with an acupressure point for winding down at night and food advice that cools rather than heats. We track sleep, heat and how settled you feel, and your endocrinologist tracks the gland.

Formulas here illustrate how pattern diagnosis shapes treatment. They are not recommendations; a practitioner selects and adjusts formulas for the individual.

Questions people ask

Can acupuncture treat an overactive thyroid?

No. Hyperthyroidism and Graves' disease need medical treatment from an endocrinologist. Acupuncture and herbs are used as supportive care for symptoms such as anxiety, poor sleep and heat, alongside that treatment.

Do I keep taking my thyroid medication?

Yes. Keep taking antithyroid medication, beta blockers or anything else exactly as prescribed. We never suggest changing it, and any decision about dose, radioactive iodine or surgery stays with your endocrinologist.

Are herbs safe with an overactive thyroid?

Herbs are chosen with extra care here. Some classical herbs and seaweeds for the neck are rich in iodine, which can affect thyroid function, so we avoid them and check every formula against your medications and your endocrinologist's plan.

My eyes feel gritty and look more open. Is that related?

It can be. Graves' disease can affect the eyes, so tell your endocrinologist and see an ophthalmologist about it. Sudden pain, double vision or a change in sight needs prompt eye care.
