Two lenses, one plan

Metal 金 is the phase it is most often read through. Here the classical lens leads: differential pattern diagnosis decides the treatment, with the Western picture as context.

The Western lensAnatomy, physiology, biomechanics

Symptoms that outlast the infection

Long COVID describes symptoms that persist or appear months after infection, most often fatigue, brain fog, breathlessness, poor sleep and a racing heart on standing. Several mechanisms are being studied, including lingering immune activation and effects on the autonomic nervous system, and none is settled.

Post-exertional symptoms
A worsening of fatigue, pain and thinking a day or two after physical, mental or emotional effort. It is why pacing, staying inside your available energy, is central to care.
The medical workup
Heart, lung, blood and thyroid causes, and conditions such as POTS, are for your physician to check. Bring what you have been told.
Where support may fit
Acupuncture and herbs are being studied for long COVID symptoms, and the evidence is early. We make no claims about recovery.

The classical lensChannels, patterns, the five phases

An illness that left something behind

The classics describe febrile illnesses that end but leave residual heat or damp in place, over a body whose qi and yin the fight has spent. Long COVID is read the same way: which residue remains, and what has been depleted.

Clear first or build first
When lingering heat or damp leads, it is cleared gently before heavy tonics are added, so the residue is not locked in. When depletion leads, building comes first.
The Lung and the Spleen
Breathlessness and a weak voice point to the Lung; fog, heaviness and a poor appetite to the Spleen. Most people show some of both.

Patterns we often see

  • Qi and yin both depleted qì yīn liǎng xū 氣陰兩虛
  • Lingering heat not cleared yú rè wèi qīng 餘熱未清
  • Spleen deficiency with damp pí xū shī kùn 脾虛濕困
  • Phlegm and stasis in the collaterals tán yū zǔ luò 痰瘀阻絡

Patterns are examples of how this is often read, never a diagnosis. Yours is read at your visit.

How we work: one plan

Short, gentle acupuncture sessions with few needles, acupressure you can use at home, a classical formula for the layer that leads and simple food advice. The pace follows how you feel in the two days after each visit. Your physician stays your primary doctor, and chest pain, fainting or severe breathlessness go to emergency care first.

What long COVID is

Long COVID is the name for symptoms that carry on, or appear, in the months after a COVID infection. The most common are exhaustion, brain fog, breathlessness, a racing heart on standing, poor sleep, aches and changes in smell or taste. Other viral illnesses can leave a similar trail. Research into the causes is ongoing, and your physician's job is to look for anything that needs specific medical treatment.

The crash after effort

Many people with long COVID have post-exertional symptoms: a walk, a busy day or even a demanding conversation is followed a day or two later by a crash in energy, pain and thinking. That changes how care has to work. Pacing means staying inside the energy you have, resting before you need to and building up slowly, and it applies to treatment as well. A session that leaves you flattened has done harm, so we start light and let your response set the pace.

A residue and a deficit

Chinese medicine has long described illnesses that end but leave something behind. Lingering heat shows up as a dry mouth, a low-grade warmth in the afternoon, restless sleep and a red tongue. Lingering damp feels like heaviness, fog, a poor appetite and loose stools. Underneath both, the fever and the long fight often spend the body's qi and yin, which is why rest alone may not restore energy. In some people a sense of pressure in the chest or fixed aches points to phlegm and stasis in the small vessels.

How we work with it

Acupuncture here is gentle, with short sessions and few needles, and acupressure points you can use at home. A classical formula is chosen for the layer that leads: when qi and yin are both drained, a practitioner might consider Generate the Pulse Powder (Shēng Mài Sǎn, 生脈散), and something cooler when lingering heat leads. Food advice is simple and warm (dietary therapy). We keep a record with you of good days, crashes and sleep, and change the plan when the pattern shifts.

Formulas here illustrate how pattern diagnosis shapes treatment. They are not recommendations; a practitioner selects and adjusts formulas for the individual.

Questions people ask

Can acupuncture help long COVID?

Research on acupuncture and herbs for long COVID is early and ongoing, and we make no claims about recovery. Some people find gentle, paced treatment helps them cope with fatigue, sleep and breathing, and we treat the pattern we find alongside your physician's care.

Will treatment wear me out?

It should not. With post-exertional symptoms we start with short, light sessions and few needles, and we watch how you feel over the following two days. If a visit sets you back, we scale down.

Do I need a diagnosis first?

We ask that you see your physician first, so that heart, lung, blood and other causes of your symptoms are checked. Bring what you have been told and any test results; they are part of the picture.

What symptoms need emergency care?

Chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, or sudden weakness, numbness or trouble speaking need emergency care first. Call 911.
