Pink eye (conjunctivitis)

For people with pink eye that keeps coming back, allergic eyes that flare each season, or irritation that lingers after an infection has cleared. A red eye with pain, light sensitivity or blurred vision goes to an eye doctor first.

Two lenses, one plan

Metal 金 is the phase it is most often read through. Here the Western lens leads, with the classical lens alongside.

The conjunctiva and its triggers

The conjunctiva is packed with small vessels and immune cells, which is why it reddens so readily. Viruses, bacteria and allergens each set off a different kind of inflammation, and the discharge, itch and pattern of spread are clues to which.

Allergic eyes
In allergic conjunctivitis, mast cells in the conjunctiva release histamine on contact with pollen or dander. It often travels with hay fever and eczema.
Where the line is
Pink eye rarely affects vision. Pain, light sensitivity and blur suggest something deeper than the surface, and that is the line between waiting and seeing a doctor.

The classical lensChannels, patterns, the five phases

Heat at the white of the eye

The white of the eye is the Qi Wheel of the Lung, the first to meet wind from outside. Old names such as 暴風客熱, sudden wind with invading heat, describe the acute red eye, and a red eye that spread through a household was called 天行赤眼, the epidemic red eye.

When it keeps coming back
Eyes that redden every spring, or with every stressful week, are read as a surface defense that lets wind in easily, or as Liver fire that flares under pressure.

Patterns we often see

  • Wind-heat invading the eye fēng rè wài xí 風熱外襲
  • Liver fire flaring upward gān huǒ shàng yán 肝火上炎
  • Spleen and Stomach damp-heat pí wèi shī rè 脾胃濕熱

Patterns are examples of how this is often read, never a diagnosis. Yours is read at your visit.

How we work: one plan

Body acupuncture and distal Master Tung's points with a formula that clears wind or heat, and for long-standing cases M48 micro acupuncture combined with scalp acupuncture and electro-stimulation when appropriate. Your eye doctor or physician comes first for any painful red eye, and prescribed drops stay in place.

A red eye that needs a doctor first

Most pink eye is mild. Some red eyes are not pink eye at all. See an eye doctor the same day if you have:

  • eye pain, more than mild grittiness
  • sensitivity to light, or blurred vision that does not clear when you blink
  • a red eye while wearing contact lenses
  • a red eye after an injury or a chemical splash (rinse with clean water and get emergency care)
  • a newborn with red or sticky eyes

These can signal a corneal infection, uveitis, a sudden pressure rise or an injury, each needing prompt medical treatment.

What conjunctivitis is

The conjunctiva is the thin, clear skin over the white of the eye and the inside of the lids. When it is inflamed, the vessels in it swell and the eye turns pink or red. Viral conjunctivitis, the common kind, is watery, spreads easily and usually runs its course. Bacterial conjunctivitis brings thicker, sticky discharge and may need antibiotic drops. Allergic conjunctivitis itches, affects both eyes and follows the seasons or a pet. Keep contact lenses out until your doctor says otherwise.

How we work with it

We mainly see people whose eyes flare every allergy season, whose irritation lingers, or whose red eyes travel with sinus trouble, poor sleep or a short temper. The reading separates the patterns: wind-heat that arrives fast with a scratchy throat, Liver fire with burning and irritability, damp-heat with heavy, sticky discharge. Body acupuncture and distal Master Tung's points work from a distance, and a formula clears heat or wind as the pattern shows. For long-standing cases M48 micro acupuncture may be added, combined with scalp acupuncture and electro-stimulation when appropriate.

Food that runs hot, such as alcohol and fried or spicy meals, is part of the conversation, see dietary therapy. For allergic eyes, see also allergies. Keep any drops your doctor prescribed.

Questions people ask

Is pink eye contagious?

Viral and bacterial pink eye spread easily, so wash your hands often, avoid sharing towels and pillowcases, and ask your doctor when you can return to work or school. Allergic pink eye is not contagious.

Should I see an eye doctor or come to you?

See an eye doctor first if your eye is painful, sensitive to light or blurry, if you wear contact lenses, or if a newborn has red or sticky eyes. We mainly see people with recurring or lingering red eyes, alongside that care.

Can acupuncture help allergic eyes?

Acupuncture has been studied as supportive care for eye and nose allergies, and research is ongoing. We treat the pattern behind seasonal flares, often starting before your usual season.
