The eye and the visual brain

Eye-focused acupuncture is thought to influence blood flow and nerve activity in the eye and along the visual pathway. Research is ongoing, and it is supportive care alongside your eye doctor.

M48 micro acupuncture
A microsystem of mapped points on the hands and feet, chosen by where in the eye the problem lies: the retina, the macula or the optic nerve.
Scalp acupuncture
Zones over the visual cortex at the back of the head, for the brain's side of seeing.
Electro-stimulation
When appropriate, a gentle current is added to selected points.

Points beyond the eye

M48 is combined with traditional systems. Master Tung's points, distal points away from the eye and a few selected points around it are chosen from your pattern, read through the Liver, the Kidney and the Five Wheels.

Herbs
An individualized classical formula is added when the pattern calls for one, and revised as the pattern shifts.

How we work: one plan

M48 micro acupuncture combined with scalp acupuncture, Master Tung's points and electro-stimulation when appropriate, as a course of visits planned with you and reviewed against your eye exams.

What M48 is

M48 is a microsystem: a set of mapped points on the hands and feet, chosen by where in the eye the problem lies, such as the retina, the macula or the optic nerve. Michael is M48 (Micro Acupuncture 48) certified by Dr. Andy Rosenfarb.

Combined, not alone

Here M48 is combined with traditional systems, because each one reaches a different part of seeing:

  • Scalp acupuncture over the visual cortex at the back of the head, for the brain's side of vision.
  • Master Tung's points, a lineage of distal points worked away from the eye.
  • Electro-stimulation, when appropriate, a gentle current added to selected points.
  • Classical points and herbs, chosen from your pattern and the Five Wheel reading of the eye.

A first visit

  1. The Five Wheels. A careful look at the eye itself, read through its five classical regions.
  2. Pulse, tongue and history. The pattern behind the change in sight.
  3. Your records. OCT, acuity, pressure and visual field reports from your eye doctor. We do not run these tests here.
  4. The plan. The combination of systems for your case, a classical formula if the pattern calls for one, and how we will review it with you.

Questions people ask

Will this restore my vision?

We cannot promise that, and no one honestly can. We tell you what we find and what we are working on, and we track changes with you against the exams your eye doctor runs.

Does it hurt?

The M48 points on the hands and feet are needled with very fine needles. Most people feel a brief pinch and then little else. Points around the eye are few and placed gently.

Should I keep my eye drops and injections?

Yes. Keep every treatment your eye doctor has prescribed. This work sits alongside that care, never in place of it.
