What diminished ovarian reserve is
Ovarian reserve is the pool of eggs still waiting in the ovaries. Everyone's pool shrinks with age; with diminished ovarian reserve it is smaller than expected. It is usually picked up on tests: anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), made by small growing follicles, a day-3 follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) that runs high because the brain is pushing harder, and an ultrasound count of resting follicles. These numbers help a clinic plan medication doses and set expectations. They describe a reserve, not a verdict, and people with low AMH do conceive.
When the number feels heavy
A low result can change how a person sees their whole body, and the stress of that is real. The classical reading starts somewhere else: Kidney essence, 腎精, the deep reserve behind growth, reproduction and aging. Night sweats, a dry mouth, a short cycle and scant flow lean toward yin depletion. Cold hands, low libido and a long, cool first half of the cycle lean toward yang. Often both are low, with blood too thin to fill the Sea of Blood. When yin and essence are the gap, a practitioner might consider Zuo Gui Wan (Restore the Left Pill); when yang leads, a warming formula instead.
How we work with it
Acupuncture to support the Kidney, calm the stress response and encourage blood flow to the pelvis, a formula chosen for your mix of yin and yang, and moxibustion when cold is part of it. Sleep, rest and food are treated as part of the medicine. If you are working with a clinic, herbs are only used with their knowledge.
Formulas here illustrate how pattern diagnosis shapes treatment. They are not recommendations; a practitioner selects and adjusts formulas for the individual.
Questions people ask
Can acupuncture raise my AMH?
We do not make that claim. AMH reflects the number of remaining follicles, and there is no reliable evidence that any treatment raises it in a lasting way. Our aim is the terrain around those follicles, how you are sleeping, digesting and cycling, as support alongside your clinic's plan.
Is low AMH the same as egg quality?
No. AMH is a rough guide to quantity. Quality depends a great deal on age and on factors no blood test fully captures, which is why your reproductive physician reads AMH together with your age, follicle count and history.
Do you need my test results?
They help us understand your situation, so bring them if you have them, and we will walk through what they describe. We do not require any tests before treating, and diagnosis stays with your physician.
Should I start before an IVF cycle?
Many people like to begin before stimulation so the plan has time to settle. Talk with your clinic about your timeline, and see our [IVF support](/conditions/ivf-support/) page for how visits fit around each phase.
