Cupping

bá guàn

Cups that use gentle suction to lift the skin and the tissue under it, most often across the back, shoulders and neck. We use it inside a longer visit, chosen from your pattern.

Two lenses, one plan

Here the classical lens leads: differential pattern diagnosis decides the treatment, with the Western picture as context.

The Western lensAnatomy, physiology, biomechanics

Lifting the tissue

Suction lifts the skin and the tissue under it, a kind of massage in reverse that is thought to ease muscle tension and draw blood to the area. It is used most for the neck and back and for sports recovery.

The marks
The round marks are thought to come from small blood vessels near the surface reacting to the suction. They are expected, fade on their own and are not a measure of how well a treatment worked.

The classical lensChannels, patterns, the five phases

Moving stagnation

Cupping moves stagnant qi and blood and releases the surface, most often across the back and shoulders.

The Bladder channel
Cups along the muscles beside the spine sit over the Bladder channel and its back transport points, each linked to an organ, which is why placement follows the pattern.
The Lung and the surface
Over the upper back, cupping is a traditional way to release the exterior and help the Lung descend, for a lingering cough or a tight chest.

How we work: one plan

Usually part of a longer acupuncture visit rather than on its own, sometimes with gua sha or moxibustion where the pattern calls for warmth. Placement and suction are chosen from your pattern, and we check your medications and skin first.

Massage in reverse

Most hands-on work presses down. Cupping lifts. Glass or silicone cups are placed on the skin and suction draws the skin and the layers beneath it up into the cup. The pull is thought to ease muscle tension and bring blood to the area, and in classical terms it moves stagnant qi and blood and releases the surface.

Three ways to use the cups

  • Stationary cups. Left in place over an area of tension for a few minutes.
  • Gliding cups. Moved along the muscles beside the spine or across the shoulders over a little oil, covering a broad stretch of tissue.
  • Flash cupping. Applied and released quickly over and over, a lighter form often used over the upper back and chest area for the lungs.

Where we use it

Cupping shows up most in plans for neck and upper back pain and low back pain, and in sports recovery between training blocks. Across the upper back it is a traditional part of care for a lingering cough or tight chest after an illness, and for stress that collects in the shoulders. The pattern decides where the cups go and how strong the suction is.

About the marks

The marks are the most noticeable part of cupping. Their color and depth vary from person to person and from one area to the next, and we note them as part of the picture. They are not the goal of the treatment, and stronger marks are not a sign of a better result.

When we hold back

We do not cup over broken skin, a rash, a varicose vein, a recent injury that is still swelling, or the abdomen and low back in pregnancy. Bleeding disorders and blood-thinning medication call for a lighter approach or another method, so tell us what you take, and keep taking it as prescribed. Very fragile skin is treated with care or not at all.

Questions people ask

Will cupping leave marks?

Often, yes. Round red or purple marks are common where the cups sat and usually fade on their own over several days. They are rarely sore. If you have an event where the marks would bother you, tell us and we can choose another method.

What does cupping feel like?

A firm, pulling pressure that most people find relaxing, like a massage that lifts instead of presses. The suction is adjusted to you and can be made lighter at any time.

Can I exercise after cupping?

It is best to keep the area warm and covered and to skip hard training for the rest of the day.
