What arthritis is
Arthritis is a family of joint conditions rather than one disease. Osteoarthritis is the common one: the cartilage that lines a joint thins, the bone underneath remodels, and the joint stiffens after rest and aches with load. Knees, hips, hands and the spine are typical, and it becomes more common with age, old injuries and extra body weight. Conventional care includes exercise, weight management, pain relief, injections and, for some joints, replacement surgery.
Rheumatoid arthritis and the other inflammatory types (psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus-related arthritis) are immune conditions that can damage joints and affect other organs. They need a rheumatologist and disease-modifying treatment, and early treatment matters. Gout comes from uric acid crystals and needs a physician's care.
What we can and cannot offer
For osteoarthritis, our work is aimed at pain, stiffness and how well you move: the joint, the muscles that guard it, and the way you load it. We do not claim to change cartilage, slow joint damage or stand in for a joint replacement. For inflammatory arthritis our role is narrower still: supportive care for pain, sleep and fatigue, around the treatment your rheumatologist directs. If your joints are flaring, your rheumatologist hears about it first.
How we work with it
Acupuncture at local and distal points, with Master Tung's points when a joint is too swollen to needle, and needling of the tight muscles that guard a sore joint (see dry needling). Moxibustion suits joints that are worse in cold and damp weather; it is not used on a hot, swollen joint. A classical formula may be added for the pattern, only after a check against every medication. Functional movement work keeps the joint moving between visits.
We track morning stiffness, a walk or a stair count, and sleep, and review them with you at each visit.
Questions people ask
Can acupuncture help arthritis pain?
Acupuncture has been studied mainly for osteoarthritis pain, especially of the knee, and research is ongoing. We use it as supportive care for pain, stiffness and movement. It does not rebuild cartilage, and we do not suggest that it does.
I have rheumatoid arthritis. Can I still come in?
Yes, as supportive care for pain, stiffness, sleep and fatigue, with your rheumatologist leading. Your disease-modifying or biologic medication stays exactly as prescribed, and any herbs are checked against it first. We do not treat the immune disease itself.
Is acupuncture safe if I take blood thinners or steroids?
Tell us about every medication. Technique is adjusted for blood thinners and for skin or bone thinned by long steroid use, and herbs are only considered after a check against your full list.
When does a sore joint need a doctor first?
A single joint that turns hot, red and very swollen, especially with fever, needs urgent medical care, as it can mean infection or gout. New joint swelling in several joints, or morning stiffness lasting more than an hour, is worth a physician's assessment for inflammatory arthritis.
