What a cataract is
Behind the iris sits a clear lens that focuses light onto the retina. Over the years the proteins in it change, and the lens slowly yellows and clouds. That is a cataract. It tends to show up as blur that new glasses no longer sharpen, glare and halos around headlights at night, colors that look washed out and a need for more light to read.
Age is the main cause. Diabetes, steroid medication, smoking, sun exposure, eye injury and earlier eye surgery can bring it on sooner.
Where surgery fits
When a cataract gets in the way of driving, reading or work, cataract surgery is the standard treatment: the clouded lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial one. Nothing on this page is a reason to put off a surgical consultation. Your ophthalmologist decides when the time is right, together with you.
Supportive care tends to fit three moments: while a cataract is early and mostly a nuisance, in the run-up to surgery, and in recovery afterward with your surgeon's agreement. Other eye conditions, such as dry eye or macular changes, often travel with cataracts, and they belong to the same reading.
How we work with it
A visit combines M48 micro acupuncture with scalp acupuncture, Master Tung's points and electro-stimulation when appropriate. When the reading shows Liver and Kidney depletion, a practitioner might consider Ming Mu Di Huang Wan (Bright Eyes Rehmannia Pill). When tiredness, heaviness and a sluggish appetite lead, the herbs build the Spleen first. See herbal medicine, and for food advice from the same reading, dietary therapy.
We follow glare, comfort when driving at night and eye fatigue with you, while your ophthalmologist measures the cataract itself.
Formulas here illustrate how pattern diagnosis shapes treatment. They are not recommendations; a practitioner selects and adjusts formulas for the individual.
Questions people ask
Can acupuncture or herbs clear a cataract?
No. Acupuncture and herbs do not clear a clouded lens. When a cataract limits your sight, surgery is the treatment, and supportive care sits around it rather than in its place.
Is it worth coming before cataract surgery?
Some people come while a cataract is early, or while they wait for surgery, for eye fatigue, glare and the other eye conditions that often travel with it. Keep your surgical consultation and follow your ophthalmologist's timing.
Can I take herbs around my operation?
As your surgeon advises. Herbs are often paused or adjusted around surgery, and anything we prescribe is checked against your drops and medicines.
