What macular and cone-rod dystrophies are
These are inherited conditions of the retina, each tied to one of many genes. Some act mainly on the macula; others wear down the cone and rod cells across the retina.
- Best disease (vitelliform macular dystrophy) comes from the BEST1 gene. A yellow, yolk-like deposit forms under the macula and may later break up and thin, sometimes slowly blurring central vision.
- Pattern dystrophies leave deposits in shapes under the macula and are often mild for years.
- Cone-rod dystrophy affects the cones first, bringing glare, poor color vision and central blur, with night vision going later.
- Rod-cone dystrophy runs the other way. Its main form has its own page under retinitis pigmentosa, and so does Stargardt disease, the inherited macular condition of young people.
Conventional care is accurate diagnosis, genetic counseling, low-vision support and, for some genes, clinical trials.
Glare, color and the daily load
With cone loss, bright light can be harder than darkness. Tinted lenses, lighting at home and screen settings make a real difference, and your low-vision specialist is the right person for that. In classical terms glare and dryness add to the reading of Liver yin.
How we work with it
Care combines M48 micro acupuncture chosen for the cells involved with scalp acupuncture over the visual cortex, Master Tung's points and electro-stimulation when appropriate. Where deposits are the feature, as in Best disease, the formula may lean on the Spleen to transform damp as well as nourish the Liver and Kidney.
We track glare, color and reading comfort with you, next to your specialist's imaging.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between cone-rod and rod-cone dystrophy?
It is about which cells go first. In cone-rod dystrophy the cones fail first, so central and color vision and glare are the early problems. In rod-cone dystrophy, which includes retinitis pigmentosa, the rods go first and night and side vision fade before the center.
Can acupuncture help Best disease?
It is offered as supportive care, and research specific to Best disease is very limited. It does not change the gene or clear the lesion under the macula. We read your pattern, work alongside your retinal specialist and are honest about what we see.
My diagnosis is still unclear. Can I come before genetic testing?
Yes, as long as you are under the care of an eye doctor who is working it up. Genetic results, when they come, help us understand the condition, while the classical plan comes from your own pattern.
