What Usher syndrome is
Usher syndrome is an inherited condition that affects both the inner ear and the retina. It is a leading genetic cause of combined hearing and vision loss. There are three main types, which differ in when hearing loss begins, how severe it is and whether balance is affected. The eye side is retinitis pigmentosa: night vision goes first, then side vision narrows over years.
Conventional care brings several teams together: hearing aids or cochlear implants, vision and mobility rehabilitation, monitoring for treatable eye complications such as cataract and macular swelling, and genetic counseling.
Two senses, one plan
People with Usher syndrome often feel their care is split between an eye clinic on one side and an audiology clinic on the other. Classical medicine reads the ears and the eyes together. That does not replace either clinic. It means sleep, balance, fatigue and ringing in the ears all come into the same reading as the retina.
How we work with it
Visits combine M48 micro acupuncture for the retina with scalp acupuncture over the visual cortex and, where balance is involved, the balance zones, along with Master Tung's points and electro-stimulation when appropriate. A classical formula built around the Kidney essence is often part of the plan.
We agree with you on what to follow, such as moving around at dusk, balance and fatigue, alongside the field tests and hearing reports your specialists send.
Questions people ask
Can acupuncture help Usher syndrome?
It is offered as supportive care for the whole picture, and research on Usher syndrome specifically is very limited. It does not restore hearing or change the retinal disease. We work alongside your specialists and tell you plainly what we find.
Does treatment address hearing as well as vision?
The classical reading links the ears and the deep eye through the Kidney, so the plan considers both. We make no promise about hearing, and your audiologist stays in charge of hearing care, aids and implants.
How do visits work if I have trouble hearing?
Tell us how you prefer to communicate. Written notes, a bright, well-lit room facing you and a family member or interpreter are all welcome, and we can share instructions in writing after each visit.
Is acupuncture safe with a cochlear implant?
Tell us about any implant before your visit. Needling and electro-stimulation are planned around it, and current is never used near the device.
