Retinitis Pigmentosa
Acupuncture is a great therapy for treating retinitis pigmentosa symptoms. RP is a progressive disease of the eyes, where the vision deteriorates. Progress is usually slow, over years, but if left untreated can lead to near total blindness. What is the mechanism? There is gradual degeneration of the photoreceptors in the retina. As it progresses, cells from the pigmented layer in the retina migrate to the layer containing the nerve cells giving rise to characteristic dark star shaped areas which are visible on examination. Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for retinitis pigmentosa. There is the possibility of slowing down, and even stopping the progress of the disease. Our experience shows that treatment alone is not enough for the benefits of treatment to be maintained, and that significant changes in life style are needed to prevent its return. Some people respond very well to treatment, while others only respond slightly. We recommend everyone try one course to discover if they are responding to treatment. Generally one can hope to bring back the sight to the state it was about 2 years ago.
