Acupuncture for Usher Syndrome

Usher Syndrome — What It Is

Usher Syndrome is the most common cause of combined deafness and blindness in adults. It is a genetic condition affecting both hearing and vision — caused by mutations in genes responsible for the development and function of sensory hair cells in the ear and photoreceptor cells in the retina. There are three clinical types, varying in severity and onset of each sensory loss. Retinitis pigmentosa is the hallmark eye manifestation, typically progressing from night blindness and peripheral field loss toward central vision over time.

No conventional treatment reverses Usher Syndrome’s progression. Management focuses on monitoring, low-vision and hearing rehabilitation, cochlear implant evaluation in appropriate cases, and genetic counseling.

How TCM Reads Usher Syndrome

Usher Syndrome presents one of the clearest examples of a condition classical Chinese medicine reads as a deep Kidney Jing (腎精) deficiency pattern.

The Kidney in TCM governs the ears (腎開竅於耳 — “the Kidney opens into the ears”) and contributes to the visual foundation through the Water-Wood axis (Water nourishes Wood; Kidney Jing feeds Liver Blood, which nourishes the eye). When the Kidney’s constitutional store runs depleted — as in a genetic deficiency present from birth — both hearing and vision are affected simultaneously. This is the exact picture Usher Syndrome presents.

The relevant Five Wheels territory is the Water Wheel (水輪) — the inner eye structures, photoreceptors, and optic network. Kidney Jing deficiency leaves this wheel undernourished; the rod-cone degeneration that characterizes RP in Usher patients unfolds from this depleted root.

Associated systemic signs of Kidney Jing deficiency: premature hair changes, early tinnitus, low back weakness, reduced vitality, constitutional fatigue disproportionate to activity level.

Our Approach — M48 Acupuncture + Classical Herbal Prescription

Acupuncture: Usher Syndrome sessions are built around the Water Wheel and the Kidney-Liver axis. Deep Kidney channel tonification, Bladder channel support for the optic network, scalp acupuncture for the visual cortex, and Liver channel work to move Blood toward the eye’s diminishing substrate. How M48 ophthalmology acupuncture works.

Herbal prescription: The formula is built to nourish Kidney Jing and Liver Blood together — the foundational pairing for visual and auditory function. This typically draws from the Di Huang Wan family: Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (杞菊地黃丸) for the eye-specific presentation, or deeper Jing-nourishing modifications when the constitutional depletion is more pronounced. These are not standard supplement formulas — they are individualized classical prescriptions composed to the patient’s specific pulse and tongue picture. See our herbal formula approach.

What to Expect

This program helps manage symptoms commonly associated with Usher Syndrome — including visual function and balance patterns. It does not address the genetic cause, does not restore hearing, and does not reverse retinitis pigmentosa. Patients should maintain regular monitoring with their ophthalmologist, audiologist, and genetic specialist.

Makari works alongside your specialist team, not as a replacement for it. Individual results vary.

Usher Syndrome is a genetic condition affecting both vision and hearing. This program is supportive in nature and does not replace genetic counseling, audiology, or specialist ophthalmic care. Individual results vary.
