Acupuncture for Macular Pucker and Macular Hole
What They Are
A macular pucker (epiretinal membrane) is a thin layer of fibrous scar tissue that grows on the inner surface of the macula. As it slowly contracts, it can cause central vision to blur or distort — straight lines appear wavy, fine detail becomes difficult. Most cases develop without a known cause; prior retinal procedures, inflammation, or vitreous detachment can increase risk.
A macular hole is a small break or opening in the central macula, most often caused by vitreous traction. Small holes may not significantly impair vision; full-thickness holes can cause a distinct central blind spot and significantly reduced visual acuity. Surgical treatment (vitrectomy with gas tamponade) is the standard for full-thickness macular holes affecting vision.
This program does not replace surgical consultation or management when indicated.
How TCM Reads These Conditions
Both conditions involve the Water Wheel (水輪) — the deepest Kidney-governed territory of the eye. Classical Chinese medicine does not have specific anatomical diagnoses for epiretinal membranes or macular holes, but reads their underlying patterns through:
- Liver Blood deficiency with vitreous disharmony. The Liver Blood nourishes the vitreous and the tissues attached to the macular surface. When Blood runs thin, the vitreous-macular interface loses its nourishing substrate. This is the most common constitutional background for epiretinal membrane development.
- Kidney-Yin deficiency with dryness. Dryness in the Water Wheel territory — the inner structures of the eye — creates a substrate in which tissue thinning and structural changes occur. Low-back weakness, tinnitus, and afternoon fatigue alongside the visual symptoms are classic co-signs.

Our Approach — M48 Acupuncture + Classical Herbal Prescription
Acupuncture: Sessions nourish the Water Wheel through the Kidney-Liver axis — Kidney and Bladder channel points for the root, Liver channel points to move Blood toward the macular territory, scalp acupuncture for the visual cortex. How M48 ophthalmology acupuncture works.
Herbal prescription: Liver Blood deficiency presentations draw from Qi Ju Di Huang Wan (杞菊地黃丸) — nourishing the Liver-Kidney Yin axis with direct eye-targeting herbs (Gou Qi Zi 枸杞子, Ju Hua 菊花). Deeper Kidney Yin deficiency presentations use Liu Wei Di Huang Wan (六味地黃丸) as the base. See our herbal formula approach.
What to Expect
This program helps manage symptoms commonly associated with macular pucker — including central visual distortion patterns and visual clarity. It does not dissolve epiretinal membrane or repair macular holes. For presentations where surgery is indicated, this program may serve as pre- or post-surgical supportive care under your surgeon’s approval.
Patients should maintain ophthalmologic monitoring. Makari works alongside your care team. Individual results vary.
Macular pucker and macular hole can require surgical management. This program does not replace ophthalmologic evaluation or surgical consultation when indicated.
