Acupuncture for Rod-Cone Dystrophy
Rod-Cone Dystrophy — What It Is
Rod-cone dystrophy describes a group of inherited retinal disorders in which both rod photoreceptors (governing peripheral and low-light vision) and cone photoreceptors (governing central and color vision) progressively degenerate. Retinitis pigmentosa is the most well-known form; other genetic variants include RPGR-linked dystrophies, ABCA4-associated rod-cone presentations, and others. The common thread is the progressive loss of photoreceptor function driven by genetic mutations that disrupt the visual cycle.
There is currently no approved treatment that reverses rod-cone dystrophy. Gene therapy trials are ongoing for specific genetic subtypes. Management focuses on monitoring, low-vision rehabilitation, and lifestyle adjustments (UV protection, vitamin A supplementation in appropriate non-ABCA4 subtypes — confirm with your specialist).
How TCM Reads Rod-Cone Dystrophy
Rod-cone dystrophy presents one of the clearest examples of what classical Chinese medicine describes as constitutional Kidney Jing (腎精) deficiency affecting the photoreceptor substrate.
In the Five Wheels framework, the photoreceptors and deep retinal structures belong to the Water Wheel (水輪) — the territory of the Kidney. The Kidney stores Jing (constitutional essence), the deep substrate underlying all tissue development and maintenance. When the Kidney Jing is constitutionally depleted — as in a genetic deficiency present from birth — the photoreceptors lose their nourishing root progressively over time.
The parallel between modern genetics (a mutation in the biochemical machinery of the photoreceptor) and classical doctrine (Kidney Jing depletion withdrawing the photoreceptor’s constitutional substrate) is not a claim of equivalence — it is an observation that both frameworks identify the same tissue territory losing its functional basis over time.
Associated systemic signs: premature aging patterns, low-back weakness, tinnitus and hearing decline (Kidney governs the ears), constitutional fatigue, declining adaptability to darkness.

Our Approach — M48 Acupuncture + Classical Herbal Prescription
Acupuncture: Treatment centers on the Water Wheel through deep Kidney channel tonification — the primary channels for reaching the Jing root. Bladder channel support reaches the optic network through its posterior pathway; Liver channel work nourishes Blood toward the photoreceptor territory; scalp acupuncture targets the visual cortex. How M48 ophthalmology acupuncture works.
Herbal prescription: The formula is built around Kidney Jing nourishment — the deepest classical nourishing approach. Formulas draw from the Di Huang Wan (地黃丸) family, often with the addition of deeper Jing-nourishing herbs: He Shou Wu (何首烏), Tu Si Zi (菟絲子, Cuscuta seed), Gou Qi Zi (枸杞子, Goji). The prescription is individualized to the patient’s constitutional picture, age, and progression stage — two patients with the same genetic diagnosis may present very different patterns. See our herbal formula approach.
What to Expect
This program helps manage symptoms commonly associated with rod-cone dystrophy — including visual stability patterns and functional adaptation to photoreceptor loss. It does not address the genetic mutation, does not regenerate photoreceptors, and does not stop the underlying degenerative process. Patients should maintain regular monitoring with their retinal specialist.
Genetic conditions require long-term constitutional support. Most rod-cone dystrophy patients are recommended for the Package of 20 and ongoing maintenance. Makari works alongside your specialist team. Individual results vary.
Rod-cone dystrophy is a genetic condition. This program is supportive in nature and does not replace genetic counseling or specialist ophthalmic care. Individual results vary.
Program and Pricing
Rod-cone dystrophy is typically recommended for the Package of 20 ($4,500 — 20 sessions + 2 months custom herbal formula + supplements). Initial evaluation: $200. Full pricing. — Book an evaluation.
